Itinerary

08:00 AMPick-up and driving to Abydos

We’ll meet at 08:00 A.m. at your hotel in Luxor

We’ll travel to Abydos from Luxor, a 170 km journey that takes about 3 hours. Driving along the east bank of the Nile River to Qena, we’ll then switch to a faster highway to reach Abydos.

11:00 AMAbydos and the Temple of Seti I

Abydos is one of the most significant archaeological sites in Egypt, known as one of the oldest cities of ancient and a royal necropolis where early pharaohs were buried. It also became an important pilgrimage site for ancient Egyptians.

The main attraction in Abydos is the Temple of Seti I, also called the Great Temple of Abydos. Built during the 19th dynasty (1292–1189 BC), it was started by Seti I and completed by his son, Ramesses II.

What sets this temple apart is the “Abydos King List,” a chronological list of 72 pharaohs, from Menes to Seti I, carved on the walls in the Hall of Cartouches. On your visit to the temple complex, you can also explore the Osireion, part of Seti I’s funeral complex; the smaller, ruined Ramesses II temple; and Umm El Qa’ab, the royal necropolis.

12:30-13:00Lunch

Following the exploration of the Temple of Abydos, a brief lunch will be arranged at a nearby local restaurant before proceeding to the next destination, Dendera.

13:30Drive to Dendera

The journey from Abydos to Dendera covers approximately 105 kilometers and takes about 1.5 hours by car, passing through scenic stretches of Upper Egypt’s countryside.

At the heart of the Dendera Temple Complex lies the magnificent Temple of Hathor, a striking contrast to the older Temple of Seti I in Abydos. Built during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods (323 BC – 37 AD), the Temple of Hathor stands as one of Egypt’s best-preserved and most vividly decorated temples.

Among its many highlights is the hypostyle hall, where 24 towering columns—each crowned with the face of the goddess Hathor—rise beneath a vibrant blue ceiling adorned with celestial and astronomical motifs. The temple’s colorful reliefs and architectural harmony make it a true masterpiece of ancient Egyptian art and devotion.

The Dendera Zodiac is a bas-relief carved on the ceiling of a chapel in the Temple of Hathor, depicting constellations and the Zodiac signs. The original was removed in 1821 and is now housed in the Louvre, while a replica remains on the chapel ceiling.

The Dendera Light consists of five stone reliefs portraying a mythological scene with a djed pillar and a lotus flower producing a snake. The djed pillar symbolizes stability and is often seen as the backbone of Osiris, while the snake emerging from the lotus flower represents fertility.

16:30Return to Luxor

After a day full of adventures, unwind during the two-hour drive back to Luxor. Take a moment to think about the amazing sights you’ve experienced and the fascinating insights you’ve gained into ancient Egyptian history and mythology.
