Alexandria has always been one of the holiday destinations to which those of Cairo flee in the summer months. The promenade is lined with elegant apartments and comes alive strongly from June to August.
Participants in this tradition, the rulers of Egypt also appreciated its fresh sea breezes and at the eastern end of the Cornice, about 20 km east of the town center, the khedive Abbas Hilmy II had the Montazah Palace built as a royal summer residence. .
The Montazah Palace (El Montazah Palace), built at the beginning of the 20th century, is set in a large park and overlooks a beautiful stretch of the Mediterranean coast. It combines Turkish and Florentine architecture: the tower, in fact, is inspired by that of “Palazzo Vecchio” in Florence and recalls the atmosphere of “Viareggio”
After the fall of the monarchy, the Palace is no longer an exclusive place and, with an entrance ticket, you can enter. The palace itself cannot be visited, but you can relax in the park and on the private beach.
Inside the walls emerge the ancient apartments of the khedive and the extensive and well-kept park, full of palm trees, pines and even flower beds, is an enchanting place for quiet walks or for picnics.
To the east there is also a beautiful sandy bay with the private beach of Mamoura, with a bridge connecting it to a small island, where the rules are less strict than public beaches regarding clothing and where the sand is cleaner.
