Greco-Roman Museum, Alexandria, Egypt
The ancient Greco-Roman Museum in Alexandria is very popular among tourists. You will be presented 40,000 exhibits that are directly related to the history of the development of Alexandria, various styles of art from these times. Ancient artifacts, large and small statues, papyri, sarcophagi, all belong to the reign of the Ptolemies, Greeks and Romans. This wonderful Museum covers a beautiful historical period when Egyptian culture interacted with Western culture. Bright and spacious halls are located around the Central garden. Most of the Museum’s exhibits come from Alexandria, as well as its surroundings, the rest were taken from other Greek settlements.
In the center of hall 6 you will see a huge statue of the bull APIs, which is located near Pompey’s column, and an exquisite statue of the good-natured God Serapis, which was commissioned by the Ptolemies to unite the Egyptian and Greek cultures.
And the sculpted heads of Cleopatra and Alexander will appear before you in hall 12. The most important and valuable exhibit of the Greco-Roman Museum is the terracotta statuettes, which are located in hall 18. They were discovered in the tombs of young women, teenagers and children of Alexandria, perfectly depicting the beauty of life and the sadness of early death, they were dated to the end of the IV – beginning of the II century BC.
In Alexandria, excavations are constantly carried out, various mosaic panels and interesting statues are found here, so the collection of the Greco-Roman Museum is constantly replenished.
